Family Caregivers, most of whom are over the age of 55, are at a higher risk for health issues due to the stress of day-to-day caregiving. Nutrition is something we usually brush aside for other matters, such as doctors appointments and ensuring our family’s happiness, but it is at the core of remaining vibrant and being able to take care of our loved ones.
According to Tufts University’s Food Pyramid Guide for older adults (55+) the three vitamins that are important as we age are Calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B-12. Eating a variety of nutrient rich foods is helpful but taking a multi-vitamin can be a good idea as well.
Foods that contain all 3 of these vitamins are:
- Dark leafy greens like spinach, kale, broccoli
- Milk
- Eggs
- Yogurt
If you don’t have time to prepare these foods why not have meals delivered? Most grocery stores now have prepared meals that can be delivered or picked up. Caregivers have a great deal of stress dumped on them so taking care of their own health should be number one on their list of things to do. Eating nutritionally and exercising at least 30 minutes every day is a must to keep a healthy body and mind.
My vitamin D was so low I had to get it from a Dr. I do take a multi vitamin along with my exercise program.
